What To Do

From the woods that once buzzed with the saws of lumberjacks, who fed logs into the teeming water that floated them down to the mills, the Androscoggin River has long been a strong thread that ties together seven communities along its 178-mile journey to the sea.

As its banks were settled and the region began flourishing over a century ago, people from around the world came to region to work in the woods and mills and to forge a city out of a mountain wilderness; from Quebec and Scandinavia, Italy and Russia, and Germany and Ireland.

Together, they left behind their melded cultures, their architecture and their appreciation for the riches the land gave to them.

Today, the communities of Berlin, Dummer, Gorham, Jefferson, Milan, Randolph and Shelburne, honor the legacy of the forests, mountains and the river by inviting outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy it with them.

These are popular destinations throughout the four seasons.

Along the Androscoggin's flow are miles of snowmobile trails through forests and over a mountain or two and where ATVers can make tracks over the beautiful terrain of Jericho Mountain State Park and the Success trails in spring, summer and fall.

Kayakers can paddle lazy stretches of the of the Androscoggin and canoeists can run the rapids, while hikers can take to fabled trails that bring them to the top of Mount Washington and along the fabled Appalachian Trail.

History buffs and architectural enthusiasts can explore their passions in museums and on a walk through the city.

This is a place to relax and recharge, where you can while away an afternoon tempting fish or searching for a moose and end a day by counting stars and watch the moon dance on the water.
